Screamadelica

Yet again I fail to see why a so called classic album is held in such high regard. I liked Screamadelica far more than Pills n Thrills and Bellyaches. It’s much cleverer and has much more layers to it.

This album is very much  three dimensional album, the more you listen to it, the more secrets it gives up. It’s a very rewarding album. The first time I listened to Screamadelica I thought “What the Hell is this?” My knowledge of Primal Scream is the classic ‘Rocks’ and more recently Country Girl.

I suppose I’ve been a little ignorant to a band that has produced one of the so called greatest albums if all time. I mean only really considered watching them at Reading festival a few years back because it started pissing it down while waiting for Franz Ferdinand to come on stage. As it turned out i’m glad I stayed put, as watching their set was one of the highlights of my weekend!

I often describe my musical tastes as “anything with a guitar” and the two songs I like most on this album are Movin’ On Up and Damaged. The rest of the album is a departure what from I normally listen to.

I must say it was hard work. I like Loaded and Come Together, but the rest of album seems like something a DJ would put together not a band. There are very limited lyrics in a lot of the songs and I can’t imagine the songs being played live. That said I’m very intrigued and was sorely tempted to buy tickets to Primal Scream’s Eden Session this year where they have said they are playing Screamadelica live all the way through. It would be absolutely fascinating.

While listening to the album, I kept thinking of the song ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ by the Avalanches, with all the strange sound effects and vocal clips. I did’nt really get songs such as Inner Flights.

A friend of mine listened to this album for a day after I played it in the car on the way to work. He loved it saying it was very chilled, but he’s far more into his dance music than I am (I’m completely not into it) and so is another friend I mentioned the album to.

Screamadelica seems to blur the lines of dance music and rock. That’s a difficult thing to do and seeing how effortless this album makes it, maybe that’s why it’s so special. That any not many band have tried it since. I prefer Rocks any day.

Key Track: Come Together
